Serving Up Something Special

A strong community built through simple acts of kindness.

Some of the most meaningful moments in a community are the ones that happen quietly. They aren’t planned months in advance. They don’t appear on an event schedule. Often, they happen behind the scenes, carried out by people who simply see a need and step forward to help.

That spirit was on full display at Callawassie Island on May 6.

Shortly before lunch, an unexpected call came into the Clubhouse. The pizza order for that day’s Special Olympics tennis celebration had fallen through, and dozens of athletes would soon be heading in for lunch.

The Clubhouse team was already managing a full day. A book event was underway, a golf tournament was in progress, and lunch service was fast approaching. Still, there was little discussion about what to do next.

They simply got to work.

Within roughly 30 minutes, Assistant Clubhouse Manager Alex Carranza, Karla Medina, Rolanda, Renata, Cameron, and other members of the clubhouse team had assembled approximately 60 sandwiches and prepared four pizzas. Working together behind the scenes, they made sure lunch was ready when it was needed most.

The athletes never knew there had been a problem. Neither did their parents.

For Racquet Sports Director Tony DeCandia, that quiet effort said everything. “I’m just so proud of our staff and just the way that they showed up,” he said.

As remarkable as that moment was, it was only one small part of a much larger story.

On May 6, Callawassie Island once again welcomed Special Olympics athletes from Bluffton-area schools for an end-of-year tennis celebration, continuing a partnership that has brought athletes, volunteers, and community members together for several years. The event marked the culmination of a six-week clinic program organized through SOAR (Special Olympics Area Recreation of the Lowcountry), giving athletes an opportunity to showcase the skills they had developed throughout the spring.

Over the years, the celebration has become a meaningful tradition at Callawassie. What begins in local schools each season finds its way to the island’s tennis courts, where athletes are welcomed with encouragement, enthusiasm, and a community eager to celebrate their accomplishments.

This year, 55 athletes participated in the event, including approximately a dozen athletes who competed from wheelchairs.

From the moment they arrived, the courts were filled with energy.

Laughter carried across the facility. Tennis balls bounced from court to court. Volunteers offered encouragement from the sidelines while athletes proudly demonstrated the skills they had spent weeks developing. Every successful shot, every completed drill, and every personal victory was met with applause.

Nearly 20 Callawassie members volunteered throughout the day, helping with drills, gathering equipment, feeding tennis balls, and cheering on the athletes at every opportunity. “It was really an opportunity for the athletes to come out, show what they’ve learned, and have some fun,” said DeCandia.

For many volunteers, the day was about much more than tennis. Members like Michael Donnelly brought enthusiasm and energy to the courts, while Jeff and Joni Morris, Bob and Kate Prock, and many others gave their time to help create an experience that was welcoming, encouraging, and memorable for every athlete in attendance.

Their efforts reflected something that runs deep throughout Callawassie Island. Year after year, members step forward to support causes that strengthen connections throughout the Lowcountry, and this celebration has become one of the many ways that spirit comes to life.

Whether through local outreach initiatives, charitable organizations, community service projects, or events like this one, there is a shared understanding that some of life’s greatest rewards come from investing in others.

DeCandia describes Callawassie members as “gregarious, generous, and altruistic.” Those qualities could be felt throughout the day, from the volunteers spending time with athletes on the courts to the clubhouse team quietly ensuring that every detail came together behind the scenes.

The athletes were undoubtedly the stars of the celebration. Their enthusiasm, determination, and joy brought life to every corner of the Tennis Center. Yet the day also served as a reminder of something equally meaningful.

A strong community is built through simple acts of kindness. It grows through shared experiences, genuine connections, and a willingness to show up for one another when it matters most.

While the athletes spent only one day on the courts, the relationships behind the event have been built over many seasons. What returns each year is not simply a tennis celebration, but a shared commitment to inclusion, encouragement, and community. As families headed home and the courts settled back into their usual rhythm, those connections remained.

They could be found in the smiles exchanged throughout the day, in the friendships formed on and off the court, and in the countless acts of generosity that made the event possible.

From the first serve to the last sandwich, it was a day that reflected the very heart of Callawassie Island.
