Weddings on Callawassie Island – Lovely, Personal, Unforgettable

Perhaps no example of the sense of connection people find on Callawassie Island is more focused than the fact that so many brides and couples choose here to take their vows. More than a dozen times a year, Callawassie Island is the selected scene for the celebration of a new marriage. The gathering of the families who are joined, combined with the joy of being together in one of the loveliest settings that skill and Nature can provide.

Callawassie Island Events Director Maggie Denison has become one of the acknowledged experts in wedding planning here along the Carolina Coast, thanks to the steady stream of brides who have chosen this setting over the course of recent years.

Part of a Trend

“People personalize their weddings to a greater extent today,” Maggie points out. “And we’re in an especially good position to play a part in that trend.” From the setting; to the itinerary, to the menu, Callawassie offers brides the ability to customize their wedding, making their unique dream come true. This accounts in part, for the success of Callawassie Island as a wedding destination and points the way for a continued role in the growth of destination weddings. That growth role has been steady, with twelve to fifteen weddings taking place on Callawassie Island each year since about 2015.

Maggie says the versatility that Callawassie Island can apply to any event seems to shine especially when a bride – and her close team of advisers who increasingly include the groom – set out to make the memory of her wedding stand out from others.

A Dream Setting Come to Life

“To start with the setting, Callawassie Island can actually offer gracious indoor, scenic outdoor, or even a combination in-between,” Maggie said. The classic Callawassie Island Club presents a view all its own, even from indoors. The ambiance of the Club is what most people imagine the Carolinas look and feel like at their most cordial and cultured.

A festive tenting arrangement enables brides to welcome their family and guests to the unmatched outdoor beauty of a sea island unspoiled, embraced by tidal waters. Live oaks and Spanish moss present an array of centuries-old wedding witnesses that stand in silent testimony to a kind of beauty that endures. Sea birds bless the proceedings with their wings; their graceful coming-and-going paints memories that last a lifetime. Some brides mix and match, with a ceremony outdoors and reception indoors, or vice-versa. It’s just the beginning of the freedom Callawassie Island offers, to make each bride’s wedding her very own.

Originality in Action

“Brides continually seem to be putting their own stamp on how the occasion will proceed,” Maggie said. “Now and then, a bride and groom will skip the traditional wedding cake entirely. Instead, they make a memory out of a favorite treat that’s personal to that couple.”

One such plan, Maggie recalls, took advantage of Chef Jim Spratling’s particular expertise. “They placed four specialty food and drink stations around the Club,” she recalls. “One offered tastings of four kinds of craft Bourbons, another served four different kinds of smoked bacon.” Biscuits have been another personal choice when a bride sees the open canvas for her own expression that Callawassie Island presents.

What They Say on Reflection

Looking back on their wedding experience on Callawassie Island, brides often mention the team here that supported them. Considering the beauty of the setting and the delicious diversions of the menu, this is remarkable in itself. “From the moment we first spoke with Maggie,” one said, “I had the feeling that someone had my back. Leading up to the date, I knew somebody understood what I was trying to create. And even when something unexpected came up, I knew that somebody with a lot more experience than I had was on it.”

Brides say our Callawassie Island team goes the extra mile, sometimes literally. “Things like transportation from the airports, for members of the wedding who arrived from all over, would have been a puzzle without the experience and willingness of Maggie and her team.”

Callawassie Island has a way of becoming part of the family story, most of all, for those of us fortunate to live here. Sharing that story with families who start here is another of the blessings we enjoy.

Since the story of Callawassie Island – past, present, and future – is a blend of warmth, balance, and connection, it isn’t surprising that brides and their families choose our island to begin a story of their own together. What we who live here know – and are happy to share – is that no other spot on earth offers this same serene sense of harmony. Each time we host a wedding, it confirms and reminds us what we discovered here ourselves.
