Callawassie Island Nature at its Best
In 2006, resident and Master Naturalist Dave Harris -- with support from the Golf Club and the Ecology Committee – initiated Callawassie’s Bluebird Box Building and Nest Monitoring Program. Dave and six volunteers built and mounted 30 boxes on the golf courses, private property, or on the Island’s common properties. Today we have 68 boxes, monitored by five teams of volunteers every week from mid-February through mid-August. This season our boxes fledged 220 bluebirds and 39 Carolina chickadees! Since 2007, over 1,000 blue birds have fledged. The data is entered into Cornell University’s bird population tracking database.
